AA bicycle-sharing system lets people rent a bike for a short trip and leave it somewhere else. In a station-based system, bikes are collected from and returned to docks, while in a dockless system they can be locked in any permitted place. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) describes several purposes for such schemes: covering the first or last part of a journey made by public transport, replacing short journeys that might otherwise be made by car, and helping residents and visitors explore a city.

BBecause trips often run in one direction at certain times of day, bikes pile up in some places and run out in others. In New York's Citi Bike system, for example, the morning commute tends to empty stations in residential neighbourhoods and fill those in business districts. Operators therefore move bikes around, a task known as rebalancing. Overnight they use trucks to prepare stations before the morning rush, and during busy periods small pedal-powered trailers can move a few bikes through heavy traffic more easily than a truck.

CRiders themselves can help. Citi Bike's Bike Angels programme gives members points for taking a bike from a crowded station to one that is running low, and these points can be exchanged for rewards. Researchers at Cornell University have also worked with the operator, using past trip data to predict where bikes will be needed and producing maps that show dispatchers where to send them. Such tools do not remove the imbalance, but they help staff manage it more efficiently.

DThe future of bike sharing depends partly on money. The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) reported that shared bike and scooter trips in the United States rose in 2023, driven largely by electric bikes on large station-based systems. The same report warned that funding remained unstable, with some private operators going bankrupt and some public systems losing sponsors. It also noted that prices had become significantly higher than those of other forms of public transport, which may discourage people on low incomes.
