Course outline

From 32 letters to a nine-line story

The course starts with the alphabet, then explains the vowels Farsi leaves unwritten and how letters join. From there it moves to word order and everyday words, and ends with a short story you read in Farsi.

Alphabet cards

Thirty-two letters,
one card each.

A card gives the letter’s name, its sound and a line that ties the shape to the sound: ب is a boat with one dot under it, b for boat. Each new letter comes with a word that uses it.

Word cards

Nan is naan.
Baradar is brother.

Many first words are close to one you know. Baba sounds like papa, and naan got its name from the Farsi word for bread. Word cards explain the link where there is one. They also show the sound of every written letter, with the vowels you add yourself in colour.

Cards are added to your collection as you reach them in the course. You can go back and practise them at any time.
