What’s in this chapter

Start with the Green Hill fables, which use deliberately limited language.
Read the Norwegian line before looking across at the English.
Words you have never seen in every paragraph is normal, not a sign that you started too early.
After Green Hill, move to Winnie-the-Pooh, then Doctor Dolittle.

Real books are longer and looser than this path, and that is expected. One habit matters most: keep going. Take the English for a stuck word and move on — the words that matter come round again.

Five things this path left out on purpose

You will meet these on your first page. You do not need to learn them now; you need to recognise them and keep reading.

You will see	What to do
har setthahr set, hadde gåttHAD-duh got	The two-word past. It means “has seen”, “had gone”; the second word carries the meaning.
hundeneHUUN-uh-nuh, trærneTRAR-nuh	More than one, with “the” on top. Peel off -ene or -ne.
segsay, sinseen	Words pointing back at the doer of the same sentence: “himself”, “his own”.
skogsveiSKOOGS-vay	A compound. Split it at the seam; the last piece is the real thing.
ikkjeIK-chuh, egayg	Nynorsk, the other written standard. Same language; read it as ikkeIK-kuh and jegyay.
