What you'll learn

Two vowels, one beat

Both sounds survive; they share one beat. In the respellings, a y on the end is the glide of boy and a w the glide of cow — and where a pair has no glide letter the respelling breaks it across a hyphen: KOH-ehr and HEH-ah are still one beat.

A doubled letter is not a stutter. It is the same sound, held about twice as long — and that length carries meaning, exactly as a different vowel would.

The respellings double too: aa is “aah”, ee is “ehh”, ii is “ee”, oo is “ohh”, uu is “ooh”, and ää öö üü õõ are “aa”, “urr”, “eww”, “uhh”.

What the spelling does not tell you
